Sarah Palin: 3…2…1…BLAST OFF!
By Patrick Hurley (bio)

Last night the Democrats got a preview of the future. It was a 750 mm howitzer leveled at them. They expected a simple-minded, small town rube. Instead, they experienced a blend of Ronald Reagan, Ann Coulter and Rita Rudner. She was charming, tough and graceful. She was also the Democrat’s nightmare…she was down to earth, family-centered, full of heart and for the common man. Translation: She was similar to a Democrat except with brains, common sense, compassion and depth. Like many Republicans I was not sure I would vote this year. But, after hearing Sarah the Hockey Mom, I registered this morning!

There are speakers and then there are COMMUNICATORS! Since 1960, I have heard them all from the “aw shucks”/tough talking Ronald Reagan to the charismatic pathology of Bill Clinton to the smiling Jimmy Carter to the boring clipped tones of Michael Dukakis. But, the only speaker that could match what I saw last night was the one in the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles in 1960 as the sun was setting in the west and he spoke with the passion and fervor of his New Frontier….John F. Kennedy. Until last night, he was the standard by which all speakers should be measured. Although their styles are dramatically different, Sarah Palin was just as mesmerizing. She may be the Vice-Presidential nominee, but in four years, I would not be surprised if she goes one step further…

It wasn’t just the lines that were wrote for her. Mark Scurry did a poetic job in not only castigating Barack Obama, he was just as masterful in capturing Sarah Palin. She not only read the lines, she WAS the lines! Like a hand in a glove, she flowed from insight to insight without effort like she had been delivering this speech her entire life. The conventioneers and the people at home who needed to hear her take them to the stars realized about five minutes into her presentation this was not a homemade glider, this was a rocket ship! She was charismatic, sturdy, gifted and relentless. Her ship is going to the moon, Alice! Climb on board now; she is going to be around for awhile.

You had to wonder what all the Democrats were thinking. Hillary Clinton, (”Now, I understand what I am supposed to look like up there!”) Ted Kennedy, (”She’s smokin’ HOT!”) Al Gore, (”WHO invented her!”) Joe Biden, (”Oh, Lord, I have to debate HER?”) and, Barack Obama, (”I THOUGHT a community organizer was cool…”)

We now have a new energy in this election race. Women, the military, fringe voters, young people, down to earth individuals, small town people, moms with special need children, people fed up with the gas prices, hockey players, Christians, right to life groups and voters like me who were not real excited about the choices suddenly woke up to the fact that everything has CHANGED! There is a new law in the territory. Her name is Sheriff Sarah and she is packing some major heat! If you don’t believe me, watch the crowds next week wherever she goes. More importantly, watch the ENTHUSIASM of the crowds! She is not just running for Vice-President, she is a Rock Star! Believe it. And, her songs are going to drown out the blah, blah, blah of Barack Obama who suddenly has to face the music that he is nothing more than a volunteer in a YMCA pancake breakfast with the political depth of a rally commissioner at a local high school.

Until now, Obama has been rising on his rhetoric. That is one of the ways he beat Hillary Clinton. No longer. It will be point/counterpoint from now on. Whenever he makes a clever statement, Sarah is going to one up him. When he tries to inspire with a flowery phrase, Sarah will blast back with a hilarious load of fertilizer burying it. She is not running against Joe Biden, she is going after Barack Obama who no longer has the luxury of being the most effective communicator in this Presidential year. He is articulate without substance. He is now trumped by someone more articulate with ability.

A female commentator cattily said last night, “Sarah Palin hit a home run in the first inning. There is a long way to go.” Yes, it is only the first inning. But, Sandy Koufax is pitching in his prime and you just gave him a 4-0 lead. This gal can THROW it with speed and texture. She has all the pitches. Last night we saw a perfect game…

I have a feeling we are going to see more masterpieces for years to come from this new star. Wait and see. The Democrats are already flailing in the air trying to hit this gal. Stand up, strike three, sit down. They gone.

It will be President John McCain. After he steps down we may see even more history…

Believe it.
