You know, when I read about people expecting the government to pay them for a natural disaster, I want to scream. My family had a house on the ICW that sat on a 15" crawl space. Six times between 1996 and 2003 they were flooded by hurricanes. It was just a summer place but THEY CARRIED FLOOD INSURANCE BECAUSE IT WAS ON TIDAL WATER. We would go down and power wash it inside and out, same for the (mostly outdoor quality) furniture, and then open the windows so it could air out. When my parents retires THEY PAID OUT OF POCKET to raise the house 12' and then add about 1000 s.f. to it. They live there now. They've been through two hurricanes/tropical storms. They raise the garage doors, move the cars, lawn mower, golf cart, and boats to high ground and then they come inland until the storm passes. THEY DO NOT WAIT TO BE TOLD TO EVACUATE. And they still carry flood insurance in case the house washes away. The people in New Orleans had apparently never heard of flood insurance. Nor had the people in NY and NJ.
If you live BY the water, you may one day live IN the water. This is common sense. PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for themselves and stop relying on an inefficient, hapless government agency to nurse them back to health. YOU HAVE INSURANCE BECAUSE YOU HOPE YOU'LL NEVER NEED IT. DUH!
