"NASA's Laser Ranging Facility fires two lasers at the moon from Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland, USA. Laser beams are used to track the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter around the moon. They are fired 28 times per second across nearly 250,000 miles at the LRO, which itself moves at nearly 3,600 miles per hour. By knowing the LRO's precise location, scientists can ensure the accuracy of the moon maps the probe generates."
