Cornucopia of Corruption

By Monica Crowley

"When Republicans were in charge of Congress, the Democrats relished pointing a finger at a few GOP members who were under investigation for ethics violations. Some of these investigations were real, some were based on bogus charges and dismissed. But the Democrats plastered the entire Republican party as immersed in a “culture of corruption.”

What we are now witnessing on the Democratic side is a colorful cornucopia of corruption. A lot of it is centered around New York State. Governor David Paterson is hanging by a thread after allegations of unlawful witness tampering and intimidation in a domestic abuse case involving his closest aide. Congressman Charlie Rangel gave up his powerful Chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee after the Ethics Committee refused to give him a pass on a whole range of charges, including taking Caribbean trips paid for by corporations and not reporting taxable income. Congressman Gregory Meeks is under investigation for missing charity money he helped raise for Hurricane Katrina victims.

The only thing missing from this hot New York mess was a sex scandal, and now we have one."
