"Navy ships guard while a sea mine is destroyed...

...at the Irben Strait in the Baltic sea, about 200 km (124 miles) from the capital Riga May 20, 2009. More than 14,000 mines from World War One and World War Two still lie in the Irben Strait area estimated to be about 1000 sq km (386 sq miles). During the MCOPLAT 2009 multinational historical explosive ordnance disposal operation, conducted by NATO navies, 85 mines were found and 75 were destroyed in order to reduce risk and ensure the safety of ships travelling in the Baltic sea. The remaining ten mines were too old to pose any threat, Latvia's navy spokesman said."
