A hijacker who tried to take over a Turkish Airlines plane has been overpowered by fellow passengers, officials say.

They say the passengers on board the plane flying from Antalya to St Petersburg, Russia, quickly subdued the man, who claimed to have a bomb.

The Airbus A-320 with 167 people on board continued its flight after the incident, Turkey's CNN Turk says.

The plane later safely landed in St Petersburg, officials say.

Turkish Airlines manager Temel Kotil said the assailant was drunk.

"He was so drunk, he gave a note to a stewardess claiming to have explosives on him," Mr Kotil told Turkey's NTL television.

No explosives were discovered on the passenger, whose identity was not immediately known.

The incident happened in Belarussian air space.
